At 6:39 a.m. on Oct. 23, 1983, 220 Marines, 18 sailors and three American civilians were killed and another 60 were injured as a result of a horrific explosion detonated by a terrorist suicide truck bomb that destroyed the Marine barracks at the airport in Beirut, Lebanon.
The Reagan administration immediately attempted to deflect blame for the attack with a deluge of false statements and misrepresentations. In a televised speech four days after the bombing, the president insisted the attack was unstoppable, erroneously declaring that the truck crashed through a series of barriers, including a chain-link fence and barbed-wire entanglements, and argued that the U.S. mission was succeeding.
On February 7, 1984, 4 months after the Lebanon bombing, President Reagan ordered the Marines to begin withdrawing from Lebanon after the attack on the barracks largely because of waning congressional support for the mission.
While Benghazi was tragic, it pales in comparison to the Shame of the U.S. Marine Barracks bombing.
Rick - I posted about two events that happened on Sept 11th, I didn't post blame or push an agenda.
I can only guess as to your reason for posting about other events but why bother. The USA has been around long enough to have a lot of tragedies that Benghazi pales in comparison to, but that wasn't the purpose of todays blog post.
What was tragic about Benghazi aside from the obvious is the Obama administration created this tragedy! You claim the Reagan administration deflected blame and yet you use a liberal website for your information. The Democratic underground is a left wing site only the fringe go to! Erik why do you allow these people to post?
Paul - Reagan was far from perfect and I have read about the accounts of 1983 but in my view there is nothing we can do about 1983 except learn from it, clearly this President, has NOT.
What happened Sept 11th, 2012 is still very real and there has been zero accountability and nothing but lies have been given to the people.
For the men who died last year there can still be justice, if we had a President interested in justice that is, and clearly, we don't. He's too busy picking a fight with Syria.
As for Rick, I guess Benghazi wasn't tragic enough since he looked for something else to trump it.
Perhaps we should start posting about 1993, not exactly a shining example for the Canadian military.... it's good for those involved they have a three-year statute of limitations in the Canadian military justice code right?
My post was just a post about two events that happened on the same date but in different years. I don't know why Rick felt he had to chime in with an event from 1983 except if in fact he sees Benghazi as other liberals see it and felt he had to throw something that happened under Reagan's watch.
In any event his post stays, as will responses as long as it doesn't get out of hand.
Paul - FYI, I don't think Rick got his information from the democratic underground as plenty of other sites have almost the exact same info as he posted it.
Erik, as you stated my information about the Lebanon bombings is public information and widely circulated and acknowledged as factual.
I believe Benghazi has been turned into a political event by far-right conservatives in an attempt to discredit the Obama administration - nothing more, nothing less.
As your previous commenter demonstrated he is not willing to put the same measurement yardstick to Reagan as he is to Obama.
9/11 rose above politics. It's too bad Benghazi can't.
Rick - I believe Benghazi was and is a bag of lies pushed by the Obama administration. We'll agree to disagree, there are plenty Democrats who agree, this isn't a far right conspiracy.
I only posted Benghazi as it was also a Sept 11th tragedy. I believe no matter what side you're on and you know which side I am on, each side should be accountable for their actions.
It would have been interesting if you posted one from the Clinton era but I do believe you weren't looking for something on the Democrat side. ;)
I don't back Reagan for 1983 nor do I agree with the handling of Iran Contra but I do believe he was a far better President than Clinton, Carter or Obama.
In the end my post was about remembering two tragic events that happened on Sept 11th and not politicizing it, which I don't believe my post did.
Quoting Rick Doyle "I believe Benghazi has been turned into a political event by far-right conservatives in an attempt to discredit the Obama administration - nothing more, nothing less."
Here is a snippet, "CBS News has released a clip of an interview by Steve Kroft of 60 Minutes on Sep. 12 with President Barack Obama that indicates Obama knew the assault on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya was a premeditated terror attack--and suggests the White House later deceived the public by blaming protests against an anti-Islam video. CBS chose not to air the clip for over a month--but did air Obama’s attack on Romney that same night."
Liberals have an agenda to defend Obama no matter how poorly he lies about events. The major news outlets are in bed with this President so much so they bury anything they can to help him get reelected and it worked.

JO - Agreed.

Erik - also, thanks for not removing my post. It's interesting again that some would like to see opinions contrary to their own censored.

Rick - Let me add both Bush's, Nixon and Ford to the list of recent President's that Reagan was better than.
