There are a few year round campers in the back and we thought the place would be packed but it was maybe a bit over half full. We were very much looking forward to going here again but it doesn't have the atmosphere like it did when we were there last back in 2013. Fleetwood installed the speakers in the ceiling 6 feet behind us and they are tiny and sound horrible so I will be installing dash speakers so we can hear the system without having to crank it up loud.

The below pictures of the cameras turned out better after making adjustments and turning up the brightness from 35% to 100% and I forgot to take after pictures.

If you're looking to improve the system in your RV this comes with easier to see camera views, Android Auto, Car Play and a good sized screen for GPS this is a good choice for $200.00 on Walmart HERE.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; My response was how can a 2 inch gap on the left and almost no gap on the right be considered normal? Their response, it's an older RV...

So I wrote Fleetwood service not expecting anything and today they called me.... literally they called me... I NEVER got a call back from Keystone and that was when the Montana was new! Anyway I explained to the Fleetwood rep about the gap and his response was no, there is no way it should have that gap.

I should be getting the rig back this week, I am going to call this tech and he is going to work with me over the phone setting the sync between the motors and setting the stops and if the gap is still there I am to open a new case at the dealer and they can refer to the case with Fleetwood service to work out how to get it back to where it's supposed to go.

NOW THATS IS CUSTOMER SERVICE!!

See below, that gap is the seal below and on top is the wall, there should be no gap here yet I can stick my hand through that gap, not good. We're supposed to pick it up tomorrow afternoon leaks fixed or no, use it through Sunday then if need drop it off at the dealer to finished the leak repair or put it in storage until the next trip.

We hope to verify heat, tanks, toilet and dumping all work before leaving Sunday. We're looking forward to sitting back a bit, enjoying a fire pit and watching the Twilight Zone on the outside TV. 😊

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-36913484139145149752023-09-24T14:23:00.002-05:002023-09-24T14:23:32.640-05:005 Star Tune Update- VERY Impressed
I didn't get to drive it very far after the install since we were dropping it off at the dealer but for only driving 5 or so miles it was an entirely different driving experience. Throttle response was much improved, shifting times were better and even slowing down for a stop light was vastly improved as the transmission helped. I found myself doing 65 too easily so I'll have to watch out for that.

I believe we'll be picking the rig up this Thursday night so we can use it for a 3 day trip. I'll post more this weekend. 😀
Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-21960999603246634042023-09-22T09:57:00.005-05:002023-09-22T09:57:57.886-05:00The 5 Star Tuner Arrived!
The 5 Star Tuner arrived, I'll be going to the RV tomorrow to tune it and then drop it off at the dealership to care for the front wheel covers and the water leak. We also posted about how much Keystone didn't give a good rip including selling us a new window. Per Keystone they no longer carry parts or part numbers for a rig "that old". I know better but I refused to continue trying to get anything from them because self abuse is something I'm against.

If you're in the market for a new/used RV do yourself a favor and avoid anything made by Keystone. What's messed up is the entire industry is building crap, so it really takes effort to be this bad. 😶

Pissed Consumer Reviews

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-8267180262276594482023-09-21T05:00:00.001-05:002023-09-21T05:00:00.157-05:00Gas Class A Driving Experience - The F53/Workhorse Has Not Improved Much Since Inception
Anybody who has driven the Ford or Chevy platform be it Class C or Class A knows how they drive. How bad they are over bumps, frost heaves, road transitions and how bad they sway or get nudged over when a Semi passes by. Our last Class A rig (traded in back in 2013), was a 36ft 1999 Holiday Rambler Endeavor. It's sheer size caused it to drive on flat roads very smoothly, except when bumps etc... came around then it felt like it wanted to tear itself apart.

We only had that rig 3 years so I didn't get a chance to delve into improving it's ride, plus there weren't many options available at the time. Fast forward several years and FOMOCO/GM/MOPAR has done almost nothing to improve how they come from the factory as a chassis. RV manufacturers don't seem to care how they drive, they tout all the fancy features and options they offer but most offer nothing to make driving a gas rig more comfortable and if you ask the salesperson they blank stare at you.

Let's face it, comfort isn't the only reason to improve ride quality, saving the rest of the rig from vibrating itself to pieces over time can save service center time paying for things that happen due to a moving house being beaten to death on roads that never see maintenance despite politicians bragging about the billions spent on infrastructure improvements. Since 2008 almost a trillion dollars has made it into various administrations for infrastructure improvements only for 600 billion or so lost almost immediately before 2010 and only God knows how much has been lost since. All the while roads and bridges fall further into dis-repair. Even large State tax funded work is done to low standards or take so long they blow out the budget massively only to have the road opened and not improved (Illinois is the very worst).

So what does an RV owner do? Well, our new to us 2016 Flair 29T is lighter than our Endeavor was by A LOT and the cowl shake and front end shudder over transitions, frost heaves and bad roads is flat out frustrating but we deal with it because where we are going is worth the hassle.

RV manufacturers could easily offer options when new to enhance the ride (heck even when used), I believe Tiffin does but I don't see any others offering it? Does that make sense to you? The most common complaint about gas rigs is ride and sway and in 2023 we are still stuck with it. I'm told the newest F53 based on the Godzilla 7.3 has some improvements but the ride still sucks and also this 7.3 doesn't offer significant power improvements over the 6.8 V10 but it does offer better MPG and better power in the lower RPM ranges.

As far as suspension goes it is of course up to the RV company or the buyer to improve on the ride so a few companies have stepped up to help (for the right money of course). Steering can be improved for on center feel and return to center, you can remove the bump-stops and add Sumo spring (not springs), add better sway bars, shocks, air bags the works or the fancy Liquid Suspension that costs as much as 30+ thousand to install.

Imagine throwing 30k of negative equity into your rig to make it ride closer to a stock DP? When you buy a rig, the dealer, who could make a decent amount of money doesn't even offer these as options. Perhaps because when financing, the bank won't allow an extra 30k to be put onto the loan? I'm sure they have reasons but none of them around me offer anything except for General RV at $250.00hr. That's the other thing, RV service has doubled over the last 10 years in my area, DOUBLED.

I have watched more videos, read more articles on the F53 suspension than you can believe. I of course want the liquid option but there is no way I'm paying that much for a rig that cost 68k used, it makes no financial sense. So what I think we will do is install the steering option, front and rear Sumo springs and new Koni shocks all around and perhaps one day newer sway bars and hopefully that is enough improvement so long trips don't feel like I'm going to rounds with Tyson.

What have you guys done?

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-40843826188328610072023-09-20T14:36:00.004-05:002023-09-20T15:07:06.589-05:00Class A Performance Improvements
Imagine if you will somebody (me) wondering if we can improve both the performance and mpg of our rig. The Endeavor we used to have was the F53 6.8 V10 with 4spd and I believe weight came in around 25,000lbs and our current rig is 16,400 give or take. We know they are slow because they are moving houses after all but a big part of the problem is drivetrain loss and zero programming from RV companies. I imagine a 460 back in the day had about 220hp, with drivetrain loss knock that down to about 110hp making it to the actual wheels.

😱 I know right? The V10 was perhaps 30 to 40hp better and Godzilla is maybe another 20 or so but probably not as delivered by Ford on the F53. What really gets these behemoths going is TORQUE and it's why diesel pushers, even the low horsepower ones ruled the roads and always will. Even the 260hp ones had 600ftlb and that moves big things easier than 250ftlbs. Some of the mid 2000 and up have 600+hp and 1,800ftlb, I've driven a few, it's like a silky smooth push in the back that just keeps pushing (it's amazing) but the cost is hundreds of thousands.

Can a Class A ever get to that kind of power? Yes, kind of, however in torque the cost would be prohibitive and the engine not very reliable. A turbo would help down low grunt big time (a turbo would be fantastic!!) but it would swallow even more gas, yes, it could get worse than 7 mpg, try 3 or 4. Oy. 😭

So the best we can hope to do is to tune the engine to get some more horsepower and torque, perhaps route cooler air into the intake to help the tune?

Short answer, YES!! Peak HP and TQ are important but in the run up to peak is the most important factors. Over 100ftlb of TQ gained at 2100rpm is something that can be felt! 40hp gain at 2350rpm's is also nice.

Gains are measured at the wheel, Fleetwood claims 362hp so crank hp gain of around 65 plus approx 130lbft gain at the crank = 427hp / 592ftlbs plus the changes in transmission programming meant to be a motor home, not a basic tune from Ford that none of the manufacturers are changing turns the combo into something you can see a meaningful return on investment over a short period of time.

I should have this by tomorrow or Friday in time to test it out myself. I've done this with my previous Mustang's and my 2018 Mustang GT ran a 12.1@116 stock, with a tune it ran 11.7@123 and a gain of 4mpg on the highway when driving nicely.

I doubt I'll see much MPG improvement but drivability improvements should be very noticeable.

Here is a video showing the combo from 5 Star.

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-28328581246222570292023-09-20T08:48:00.003-05:002023-09-20T08:49:17.372-05:00I Thought I got Commenting To Work, Blogger Refuses To Let Me
Apparently Blogger isn't interested in allowing me to comment 😐 My guess is the captcha isn't being triggered when I try to post the comment.

TexCyn and others, I'll keep trying, I emailed Blogger support, we'll see if they can figure it out.

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-9053318001478320362023-09-18T08:04:00.003-05:002023-09-18T08:04:52.428-05:00Blogger Issues
Since I am back to blogging I am trying to comment on other blogs and every single time it says "Sign In" which I of course try to do and it bounces back to "Sign In" and refuses to let me sign in and comment.

Blogging settings no longer allows me to add/remove people I follow or want to follow or remove dead blogs etc... They state everything has been completed but they are waiting for a new wheel cover for the right front wheel. Everything else is done. Now I need to find storage! The place we were going to go to couldn't save us a spot so on to other options, if I can find one!

I found our rig via VIN number on Fleetwood's website, every nut and bolt is documented which is awesome news! Looking forward to another test run this weekend.

EDIT: I have tried commenting on other blogs but every single time Blogger tells me to sign in and yet I am signed in! I can blog and comment on comments on my blog but nowhere else, I have now tried 5 different browsers... argh.
Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-35932034862701967922023-09-11T14:22:00.004-05:002023-09-11T14:23:07.073-05:00We Bought The Fleetwood Flair 29T on 09/09/23

<div class="xdj266r x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs x126k92a" style="animation-name: none; background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; transition-property: none; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
We done did something Saturday the 9th, bye bye 40ft Montana albatross hello 29ft Fleetwood Flair. The TV's don't get a single channel which where we are at is impossible so I have some homework to do.

<div class="x11i5rnm xat24cr x1mh8g0r x1vvkbs xtlvy1s x126k92a" style="animation-name: none; background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0.5em 0px 0px; overflow-wrap: break-word; text-align: left; transition-property: none; white-space-collapse: preserve;">
I have a device that will read the signal strength coming off the antenna. (This was seen during the initial walk through with the Tech) The 1st slide seal facing the slide on the left and right is not making contact towards the bottom of the slide. Interior and mid seals look fine I think. Tech said he is going to check into it. Also he was going to add sealant to cap seal on the roof, unsure if that was completed, I failed to ask after doing to paperwork.

2. Passenger rear window locking mechanism is no longer attached to the window to hold it in place so it's just swinging loose. I taped it closed, it should handle rain if it rains before you
guys check it out.
3. The Lazyboy dual reclining loveseat broke, I set up the rig, sat down, reclined and it snapped. I was able to move the upper seat so it sits up straight so I could put the slide back in the next morning.
4. The TV's get zero signal even though the antenna shows signal, all cables check out so it "should" work, I saw this when in the service bay and forgot to mention it to the tech as we went to do the paperwork right after.
5. The left side cabinet over the loveseat bottom board is loose and is sagging impacting both the cabinet and the window decoration (I don’t know if it was already that way).
6. Auto leveling system does not appear to get a signal from the front and right rear back jacks that they are fully raised after retracting, the top center and right LED blink, the others turn off.

7. "My Old RV" signed off a few years ago and now this mess is what remains. As I went through the list I found many more, this is just sad. The stories of somebody's life just disappear, I like to look back at some blogs for information they gave or to just enjoy their story one more time.

It's sad how many people I have followed over the years are just gone.....

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-12373202236101131082023-09-05T17:36:00.006-05:002023-09-05T17:50:24.192-05:00
Exciting news! We have been in the same campground since July 2013 with our Montana 5th wheel. Sadly Blackhawk Valley Campground was bought out by Venture Out Resorts and they have turned this wonderful family style campground into a membership only "Resort" so everybody is moving out. We had planned on this being our last year in the same location anyway so it works out for us because as of next season we are back on the road. We feel bad for the people who spent thousands on building new decks and sheds though, the new owners are horrible, may they get what they deserve.

We close the deal on a 2016 Fleetwood Flair 29T this coming Saturday. Full body paint, bus storage compartments, 360 cameras, and only 9500 miles on the Ford V10 5spd powertrain.

This means I'll be blogging again, something I have been wanting to do. I'll post again Saturday after the deal has closed.

Erik's RV Blog http://www.blogger.com/profile/17149039572885361450noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-809406582739580270.post-65308989227388409022021-10-20T12:17:00.001-05:002021-10-20T12:17:08.133-05:00
It's Only Been 7 Months Since My Last Post, I'm On A Roll!

We only worked at the campground this year for personal reasons, we didn't even camp for one day. With the help of a fellow seasonal camper we were able to run the jacks so they actually level the rig. For the first time in a few years the battery is still good at the end of the season, I'll take that as a win. 👍

We will be working the store next year, with work being very busy plus re-doing 2 of our offices next year I'm going to be slammed so might not be at the campground every weekend. We do plan on camping, Ronda wants to be rid of the 5th wheel, it's been 8 years and we'd love to now go back to RV'ing on the road to different places again. Financially, we probably have to wait until 2023 before we can make that move.

Health wise, I finally have my blood sugar in better control but my feet and hands worsen progressively over time. Considering, I can't complain, many have lost family and friends the past year so I'm staying positive.

I hope everybody is doing well!! Remote workers are all back in the office as of March 8th and hopefully we can now proceed with many of the stalled projects we had been planning on, we'll see. Per the new President if we don't "unify" by July he may initiate lock downs again, without trying to get too political his speech didn't make much sense to me, I'll leave that end there.

We will be working the campground store again for the 6th year I think, I lose track of time these days. It will be our last year working the store, the neuropathy has continued to worsen and is now up to the calfs and is in my hands now as well. Considering I type on a keyboard all day it makes working interesting, as each finger hits a key I get a little party of nerves responding to it.

I have an appointment with a new Doctor on the 23rd, she wants to do a full physical and blood workup. With my feet getting worse it's getting hard to do my day job and much harder to work the store, getting firewood used to be so very easy to do, now I have to be extremely careful when grabbing wood off the pile or filling up wood crates. One slip and an open wound occurs (a piece of wood touching my leg can cause an open wound) and it takes a long time to heal. So, I'm going to give it the 'ol college try for this year but it will definately be my last.

Ronda doesn't want to do the camping anymore, she is done with the sitting in the same place each summer, so am I. We miss driving the Class A to different places a few times a month like we used to do until 2013. Time has flown by and the reasons for staying in place no longer apply. Sadly the 5th wheel isn't worth much of anything no matter how nice it still looks.

When we locked up the rig last October the landing jacks didn't place the rig in the right height and the middle jacks stayed up, so we will likely have to have somebody come out and check them for us, hopefully it's an easy fix.

Last year in September we had the rig power washed, he did a great job but water got into the fridge area so everything in it went bad. It's the year of Covid-19 and Ronda is working from home most days and going to the office for mail and paperwork each week. I work every other week at home and found out I am not a work from home kind of person even though I thought I would love it. Many projects are on hold due to social distancing orders and all that gobbledygook.

The campground opened on time but was very restrictive and wasn't allowed to have recreational campers. Starting this Saturday they can accept recreational campers but the store has to stay off-limits, they can come to the window though and get supplies that way.

My diabetes has progressed and my feet are worse. They're swollen pretty much 24x7 making it impossible to enjoy the motorcycle so I am going to pay it forward and let the Blackhawk campground sell it during their fall auction for the person in need they'll be doing the auction for. My best friend gave me this motorcycle and I wanted to keep it forever but it will just sit and that isn't good for it, he is ok with me donating it for somebody in need which is great.

The RV is doing well, everything works and winterizing was easy, so was de-winterizing. The front cap however is filthy and I need to have somebody come out and clean it and then buff and wax it. The rest of the rig is clean including the roof but the front simply refused to wash off. Hopefully with restrictions being loosened I can get somebody out to get the front looking like new, this is one seasons worth of gunk, incredible.

We removed the bushes from the side of the garage and this summer I need to fix the lawn that recedes more each year due to root growth and too much shade.

Unfortunately I have to hire people to do most of the outside work, they cut down the bushes and now we are going to have the house re-painted this summer and some trim work repaired.

I'll post another after picture once the house has been painted and we have our lawn back. The grass around the rest of the house looks fantastic. We are still hoping to sell the house soon, we'll see how this year goes.

I added studio monitors to my computer in my home office, the main monitor in the middle is now a 43" LG 4K monitor, the monitor on the right is an HP Omen 2K 32" monitor and the monitor on the left is my old Dell 27" WUXGA monitor. Having such sound quality near field is incredible, I never knew so much dynamic powerful sound could come from such small monitor speakers!
