Fail To Predict Earthquake & It’s Effect’s, Go To Jail!

Read the article here - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/italy/9626075/LAquila-earthquake-scientists-sentenced-to-six-years-in-jail.html

I think somebody forgot to release the news that predicting earthquakes became a reliable science. I had no idea, did you? Well, in Italy a group of 6 scientists and a former Government official are going to jail for quote, “an incomplete, inept, unsuitable and criminally mistaken” assessment of risks posed by the devastating L’Aquila earthquake that killed more than 300 people.

Who could predict 250 aftershocks let alone a massive earthquake?? Failing to asses something controllable like the levies in New Orleans is not the same thing as predicting an earthquake. It took 6 days before the earthquake happened after a small tremor, nobody knew an earthquake was going to hit. Not the Italians, not the European Union and not the USA, maybe each nation that monitors such things and tries to predict them should offer up the scientists so they can all take their fair share of the blame and jail time?

Granted, telling people to relax with a glass of wine (only one of the scientists said this) wasn’t exactly a great idea but seriously! Who honestly would have left if he said there was a chance of an earthquake? Hind sight is no way to live and the Italians have now set a precedent that is very dangerous and you can lay odds that with each tragedy going forwards, lawsuits will follow because scientists didn’t predict a tornado, or lightening or even another earthquake.

The deaths are tragic for sure but this sets a very dangerous precedent that will not bring back the dead and you can bet that scientists are going to refrain from saying anything going forward or they’ll play it so safe people can die from trying to escape the earthquake that doesn’t hit because the scientists are scared of going to jail if they don’t cry wolf. Then you know what, they’ll be sued for being wrong.

They have to pony up 7.8 million euros to be paid immediately, you think they take Visa? You think a scientist has 1.1 million euros? I don’t know what they’re smoking over there, maybe the same stuff the Norwegians were smoking when they handed a man the Nobel Peace prize for a speech…. Disappointed smile

I too was amazed at this story. It is things like this that keeps doctors and nurses from helping in emergencies. They might get sued.

From "Nanny State" to "Nanny World."

I wish there was a "Like" button because I agree totally with your post...all of it, even the bit about the speech.

Michael and Dee - I'll see if there is an add on for blogger, you bring up a valid point.

Thanks! :}

Probably no "Like". That is just on Facebook, I think.

I found where I can create options for "funny, interesting, cool" so I edited it and added "Like" but it refuses to show up. I'm stubborn so I'll figure it out! :)

Well, I made it so "reactions" was the only thing showing and blogger is ignoring the settings, maybe it will catch up later, who knows but the like option should be there, when, who knows? :)
